1) Ritual Items of the Cultus Sabbati

a) A Ritual  Mask

This mask was made by Nigel Aldcroft Jackson who authored such works as Call of the Horned Piper, Fortuna's Wheel, Masks of Misrule and, with Michael Howard, the Pillars of Tubal Cain. A practitioner of traditional witchcraft, he worked closely with Andrew Chumbley to whom he gave this mask c.1995.

It is made of papier-mβchι and clay, painted with gouache and finished with varnish. Made to be held in front of the face it presents the wild, ecstatic visage of a satyr. It is one a number made in the mid 1990s, Their creation was a magical working to realise the magico-poetic concept described by W.B. Yeats in Per Amica Silentia Lunae [Through the Friendly Silences of Moon]. This describes the imperative that the wizard creates a vizard  that gives form to the Anti-Self, or Antithetical Self ie those numinous qualities that are most other to the everyday persona. Thus the artful magus may invoke and commune with their Daimon/Angel utilising enthusiasm in the original meaning of the Greek source word ένθουσιασμός i.e. enthousasiasmos "to be possessed by a God. This strategy was developed in  co-ordination with the traditional witch Evan John Jones (author of Witchcraft, A Tradition Renewed and, with Chas Clifton, Sacred Mask, Sacred Dance) with whom Nigel was in communication.

Nigel writes:-

Andrew told me that he used this satyiac mask on at least a couple of

occasions in ritual activities in the Essex countryside at night - he

related to me that he wore it with a dark cowled robe with the hood up so

that the firelight and tapers illuminated the mask face from beneath as he

uttered incantations...

Provenance:- Nigel Aldcroft Jackson to Andrew Chumbley to present owner via a third party who wishes to remain anonymous.

b) Devotional Carving

Carved head used by Andrew Chumbley in devotional Rites

Whilst Andrew Chumbley did carve wood this item is presented as an object which he found and adopted for his devotional practice. It is not being suggested that it was carved by him. It does, however, present the opportunity to continue a magical practice commenced by him. Andrew placed the carved item in a turned wooden bowl and then ritually applied scented oils to it before it was passed on to another party who was encouraged to continue the practice. The carving has visual resonance with Lam, the praeterhuman entity drawn by Crowley and which Kenneth Grant and the Typhonian O.T.O. For awhile Andrew worked closely with the Typhonian O.T.O. Also, it is suggestive of a bishop in his mitre. The bishop is, of course, an office in the Gnostic Catholic Church, a tradition which intersects with the O.T.O. The episcopi vagantes, or wandering bishops, are traditions of apostolic ordination carried on outside of recognised Christian churches and intersect with occult traditions in such fields as Theosophy (the Liberal Catholic Church) and the O.T.O. (Gnostic Catholic Church) and Michael Bertiaux's O.T.O.A. so occultists can hold the office of bishop. After it left Andrew's hands it was impishly referred to as "the grumpy bishop". The statue is 20cm high.

Provenance:- Andrew Chumbley to present owner via a third party who wishes to remain anonymous.

c)  Hagstone

Hagstone and 32 wooden beads threaded on leather thong. A hagstone is a pebble which has a naturally occurring hole through it. They are also called witch stones (hence hag), adder stones, eye stones, fairy stones, holy stones, hex stones, serpent's eggs, snake eggs, in Welsh glain neidr [snake beads], in Gaelic gloine nan druidh [druid's stone]. Pliny described the beliefs of the Celts that they are created from saliva and slime when hordes of snakes writhe together in the summer. They toss it in the air and it must then be caught in a cloak before it touches the earth. The person who intercepts it must flee on horseback as the serpents will give pursuit until water is crossed. The miraculous nature of such a stone causes it float upstream if placed in running water (like a toad bone!). Pliny stated that the Druids believed it granted success in lawsuits and gave access to kings. It was widely believed that they could protect and heal. Also, if one looked through the hole one could see through illusions spun by witches or, indeed, see the denizens of the faerie realms. These are one of the most salient amulets of western folk magic tradition so it is no wonder that Andrew Chumbley utilised them magically. This object can be worn as a talismanic bracelet.

Provenance:- Andrew Chumbley to Hayley Tong (then a director of Fulgur) in appreciation for the typesetting of Qutub and thence to the present owner. The hagstone was probably found by Andrew on Worthing Beach on the south coast of England when visiting the Fulgur folk there in the mid 1990s.

e) The Column

These typescripts were used in the series of outdoor rituals that were subsequently published as the Dragon Book of Essex. They were performed by the Column, a ritual working group within the Cultus Sabbati. The rituals were performed outside in woods and these texts bear the scars of their performance in the field with numerous dirty marks and, particularly, red wax from when candles were held near to them to read by. These ritual texts represent magical links with the original Dragon Book of Essex rituals. Additionally some have hand written annotations and also textual differences from the published version, showing how the rituals developed over time. In some instances the typescript includes material missing from the published version. Accordingly, if married to a copy of the published edition, these will augment the book considerably. They can held in a suitable folder so as to sit next to the printed book on the shelf. This folder can be embellished with suitable artwork - either printed (there are no copyright restrictions on images reproduced for personal use) or original - to further enhance the Dragon Book making it a unique item. Some are suitable for loosely enclosing inside the book, preferably within an envelope of plastic sleeve to retain the accompanying certificate of provenance.

The Ancestral Rite, being The Spells and Formulae of Ancestral Transcarnation for the Lineage of the Peacock-dragon, 52 A4 sheets printed on one side clear slide binder. The Ancestral Rite, being The Spells and Formulae of Ancestral Transcarnation for the Lineage of the Peacock-dragon, 53 A4 sheets printed on one side, previously in comb binder. The fifth salutation is quite different and incorporates elements of the Chant of the Tree which, it seems, was subsequently developed into its own section. The Thu’ban Rite, being the Mystery of Ia: the Grand Steller Convocation of the Dragon’s Brood, 41 A4 sheets.  Pencilled annotations (125 words/abbreviations). "This Mystery may be entered by all and any that seek the Way of the Crooked Path. Its wisdom shall come more readily to those who have performed the first seven tasks of the path, most especially for those whom have undertaken the nightly observance of the Pact 'twixt Blood and Starlight, yea, even more so for those whom have walked within and beyond the circle of a year and a day. This rite may be worked alone or amongst the companie of the Serpent's Bretheren; its wisdom is given to each uniquely and alone. There let each and all attain the Magistry with the Blessing of the Unknown Mediator of the Ever-turning Way" (quoting typescript under consideration). However the wording indicating that this ritual can be done as a solitary working by anyone is not given in full in the Dragon Book of Essex. The published version also misses out the crucial 14 spells of the stars, even though they are referred to in the summary. There are also numerous other variations between this typescript and the published text. Shows signs of outdoor use. Order Ref. CULTUS-049    £300

Label on back signed and sigilised by Andrew (28.5cm x 38.5cm). In original frame, as supplied by Andrew. Drawn Samhain 1988 "Aside from some juvenilia this is the first item ever to be issued by the artist/author" (Gavin Semple, Peacock Quill). He adds that in fact there were less than 11 copies issued. Sold by Caduceus Books in 2002 for £200 Gavin also notes "The prices were set deliberately high for the nature of the works, as both a statement of Andrew's self-confidence, and as a means of fomenting comment and attention. She is a crucial figure in the Cultus Sabbati teachings and this is an icon of Her created around the birth of the Cultus. There is also an element of self portrait in this image, thus recorded a period of magical identity between the artist and the Goddess. Order Ref. CULTUS-061     £750

"This important Illustration portrays the stage of transformation when the body of flesh is the vehicle through which the Agape is made manifest. The aspirant partakes in the sacrifice of all desire, wielding the knife in the moment of all transgression. The act opens a gateway through which the initiate can birth the hidden knowledge of the rubeate child. The flesh in this stage of transformation becomes the birth and death place of the sexual daemons of the menstrual current. The illustration can be utilized as a pictorial representation for the manifestation of these subtle energies. Andrew Chumbley, One, The Grimoire of the Golden Toad, Xoanon 2000 64pp Full faux leather binding. 64pp Number 26 of a Limited Edition of 77 copies. The scarcest published Cultus Sabbatai book. It gives the ancient ritual involving the crucifixion of a toad to obtain a magical bone. This came to be particularly used to control horses. A homely yet handsome and talismanic production. This copy has small envelope with handwritten inscription with calligraphic flourish by the author "Blackthorn, Toadskin, Bone" but lacks the toad bone. Also it does not have the "Sabatrachion" magical script or the sigilised envelope that contains it. The boards are flat, not bowed as is usually the case with this edition. Order Ref. Various, Psalterium Caini, Xoanon 2012. Hardback 109pp. Limited to 701 numbered copies. This gives the image an crispness, sensuality it  is pressed into the paper. This does justice to the haunting and powerful illustrations. A collective work, these texts are “adapted from the private devotional materials of the covines, lodges and solitary practitioners of the Cultus Sabbati and the Companie of the Serpent Cross, its outer sodality.” Much previously private material, including actual magical texts is, here, shared with the world. It expresses the magical nature of Cain as worked in the Cultus. This Standard Limited to  701 numbered copies. Coloured, contoured endpapers, gilt blocked cloth. Order Ref. CULTUS-093    150

Daniel Schulke, Veneficium, Magic, Witchcraft and the Poison Path, Three Hands Press 2012, Hardback 177pp (4pp coloured plates). Silver blocking in dustwrapper. Metallic decorated endpapers. Limited edition of 1250 copies. Despite protestations by some neo-pagans, witchcraft and poisoning have always entwined. This multifaceted investigation searches out the magical nature of traditional poisons, their use for Gnosis and the flying ointments rather than homicide.  Here, the author and his associates have courageously self tested, utilising ritual to mirror traditional use, as the potential effects go far beyond mundane toxicology with the chance of accessing mindspaces shared with other users. The author reveals that the inquisitors allegations of witches cannibalistic feats in graveyards were not without foundation. Within witchcraft there were traditions of preparing poisons from the decaying bodies and bones, and utilising them in transgressive ways. Mint in near Mint dustwrapper Order Ref. Daniel Schulke (Forward), The Occult Reliquary, Three Hands Press 2010 Large format hardback (29cm x 21cm)  219pp. No.16 of 100 copies bound in full scarlet morocco, raised bands, place ribbon in cloth bound slipcase.  Aside from 1pp Forward by Daniel A. Schulke and 4pp Introduction by Graham King the book is given over to illustrations and coloured plates (of excellent quality) of the Richel-Eldermans Collection held by the Museum of Witchcraft. The selection of images has been done to best represent the collection, with no avoidance of controversial issues. The images are presented without comment, so that "the mystery of their creation and use may be conveyed".  The sheer enigma of the collection is, surely, its most salient feature. This collection of artwork and artefacts was the creation of Eldermans and his small group of associates. Clearly they were aware of the  OTO and A.'.A.'., Gerald Gardner, freemasonry and classic works concerning

witchcraft as references occur as components of the images. The age of the pictures seems to vary considerably, from pre-war to the 1970's. It would appear that the images and artefacts are the result of artistic research and creation. Perhaps interested parties contributed images in return for access to portions of the collection. Important themes include sexualised magical endeavour, folk magic, sigils, freemasonry, occasional references to more famous occult orders like the A.'.A.'. as well as a hint of sado-masochistic imagery and occasionally seventies fashion. One gets the impression that Eldermans administered a system by which he and other artists explored their imagination and knowledge of occult themes to create striking images, which are contributed to the greater project. Occult Monographs Series

Andrew Chumbley, Mysticism; Initiation and Dream, Occult Monographs 1, Three Hands Press 2012, Hardback 55pp. Limited edition of 1000 copies. Andrew married his magical endeavour to his academic studies. Here, he writes (in an academic context) of dream initiation, drawing upon ancient, Classical, Taoist, Tibetan Buddhist and Sufi to chart its nature and crucial significance. However, his magical practice in this field causes him to write with immense clarity and incisiveness, quite unlike other academic texts. Ideas and insights flood off the page. One wonders what his tutors thought! The illustrated dustwrapper is printed by letterpress in two colours. Cover and glyph blocked in copper foil on front cover. Very elegant, unified visual design.
