1) Books etc. from the Coil Collection
John
(or Jhon) Balance (Geoff Rushton) & Peter Christopherson (aka Sleazy) were
involved in the formation of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, and went on to
found Coil, a band of major importance in the field of avant garde music. These
cultural heroes developed what was, surely, one of the most important
collections or occult art and books in the world. These items are from that collection and each is accompanied by a
certificate of provenance which gives the catalogue description (but not the
price).

Osman Spare, Mystery of an Artist, IHO 2002 Paperback 266pp Illustrated.
Handsomely printed with wide margins and red embellishments, one coloured
plate. Spare's essay Mind to Mind and How was first published in the respected
TwoTracts on Cartomancy as it deals with divination. This work places it, as
near as possible, in its original context:- a response to a series of articles
by Kenneth Walker and others concerning telepathy, psychic powers and
inspiration carried in the London Mystery Magazine in the 1950s. The last pages
even give a design provided for the magazine but rejected which Spare went on
to utilise elsewhere. Some minor marks but Very Good Order No. 4-16-07 £12

Notes Towards a Bibliography of Austin Osman Spare, Mandrake 1996 1st Edition. Card covered
booklet 56p This being a proof copy, with signed inscription crossing out the
limitation of Private Edition stating such. There were no covers to the Proof
Edition, as explained in a 1pp hand written letter to John Balance from the
author that is wrapped around in its stead. As the letter explains, all copies
of the Private Edition had already been given away however, he states that the
1996 card of the Fine Madness Society makes a good cover, and wraps a copy of
that, with a further signed inscription to Jhon on it. The Fine Madness
Society, “founded for the provision of relief to unfortunate individuals with
an incurable attraction to first editions of Aleister Crowley” yearly
circulates a bizarre and amusing example of Crowley obscurantia. The 1996 card
features Crowley’s little known entrepreneurial skills as a bed and breakfast
proprietor and an Austin Osman Spare decoration – so it does make a good cover!

Some Pictures from the Coil Collection
John
Silbury Balance, The Crossing,
acrylic on board 20 cm x 30 cm in glazed frame (7 cm x 28.5 cm) Title and
artists name written inscribed on reverse.
The thick paint has been dragged across the board to produce horizontal
lines just beyond the control of the artist. It produces a strange, very
noticeable, 3D effect. Presumably liked by the artist as he framed and retained
it. Order No. 4-16-30 £480
John
Balance, The Palace of Excess, oil
and metallic paint on board, 57 cm x 46 cm in glazed frame 64 cm x 52.5 cm
Signed on picture, title and date (Sept-June 2002) given on backboard. Lush
layers of paint built into ornate abstract. The work is vibrant and raw, with
board poking through the paint at the edges. Presumably liked by the
artist as he had it framed and kept it. Order No. 4-16-32 £900
Reuben Mednikoff, Tragic Story, pastel and wax crayon on paper 37 cm x 25
cm in glazed frame 47.5 cm x 34 cm. Signed. Pencil note on reverse gives title
and states "Approx date Sept 6 1941". Mednikoff (1906-1972) was hailed
by André Breton as "the best and most truly Surrealist" of any
artists living in Britain. He and his wife, Grace Pailthorpe , were prominent
members of the British Surrealist Group
Andrew Wilson, Curator of Modern and Contemporary British Art at Tate
Britain, said "They were the only true Surrealists... ...they were the
only ones who scraped beneath the surface and dared go full fathom deep. All
the other Surrealists were mere decorators by comparison." But they lost
support in their lives and many works were lost before they were rediscovered
with articles in newspapers, eg:-
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/4711679/The-eeriest-couple-in-art.html and a
picture in the Tate. They met at a
party in 1935, their host Victor Neuburg who by then had long fallen out with
Crowley and had developed his own path, a kind of rural idyllic, spiritual
radicalism and reverie. She was from a strict Plymouth Brethren background,
same as Crowley, and 23 years his senior and far taller than him. Their
relationship was a wild voyage of Freudian adventure as they painted and
therapised over the paintings to exorcise childhood trauma and unlock their
unconscious. At one point Reuben changed his name to Richard Pailthorpe to
become her "son". The explicit interpretations they placed on their
work alienated the ever fractious Surrealists and they were expelled from the
British group. The couple found this very hurtful, and for awhile they lived in
the USA. But they returned to found the first every British art therapy class.
Reuben and Grace would have written a lengthy analysis of this piece. In its
absence we may merely note it displays one doglike beast biting anothers leg.
He has horns and eye upon his foot, Some pattern is created by scratching away
the crayon work. Order No.

Andrew
Chumbley & Others, Ritual Texts from the Ku-Sebittu Workings, 1994 - 5 Unpublished. This item combines
two original ritual texts from a series of joint magical workings performed by
the Cultus Sabbati and Typhonian OTO. They are curious and significant artefact
of organisational connection between Typhonian O.T.O. and the Cultus Sabbati. The relationship was, however, short lived, Andrew and the Typhonians
parted ways. They are items P-A+A 037 and
P-A+A 038 from the collection of Soror Pasht Akhti and Frater Anshar
offered for sale by Caduceus Books in 2015. These sold and have been combined
by the purchaser in a nice faux leather sleeve folder with metal corners. The
sigil designed by Soror Pasht Akhti for the Ku-Sebbitu series of workings has
been reproduced on the front cover. The original certificates of provenance are
also included and I have provided a new copy of the catalogue to accompany this
folder. The catalogue features coloured plates of the artwork where the
iconography of the Cultus Sabbati was first explored. The two items are:-

Andrew
Chumbley, Azoetia, A Grimoire of the Sabbatic Craft, Xoanon 2002 Frontispiece and preliminaries + ix + 365pp with many original
striking illustrations. First published ten years previously in a limited
edition of 300 paperback copies this is a remarkable work. The author sought
expression for the British Traditional Witchcraft into which he had been
initiated. Oaths of secrecy forbade blatant description of the Cunning-craft so
he drew with insight, upon Ancient Egyptian mythology, Gnosticism, alchemy,
traditional sorcery, Masonic symbolism, tantra and the work of Austin Osman
Spare to generate a vehicle for its mysteries. These are enshrouded in a cogent
and coherent system of Sabbatic ritual and sorcery, encompassed by a magical
alphabet, that can be utilised for both spellcraft and the gnosis. This work is
born of a magical act of creation continuously guided by active dreamwork and
the Daimon of the Grimoire itself, whose name, "Sethos" is
acknowledged for the first time with this publication.
This is one of the 77 copies of
the Sethos-Behana, or "Black" Edition The black cloth binding of the book is
silver stamped on spine and on the boards where it carries the skull and set square
symbol. The endpapers are black, but subtly printed with a snakeskin design
visible when the light catches it right. The silk place ribbon is black (some
are red). It is and signed by the
author with his sigilised magical name and numbered with a calligraphic
flourish. Loosely enclosed is an envelope inscribed by author with the number
but instead of the his magickal name which is usual here inscribes magickal
script in a different colour ink. This envelope is usually left unsealed but
here it was sealed, probably by the author, as the stamped design (not always
used) has been impressed over the join. This contains the additional 8pp card
covered booklet, the Rite of Amethystine Light, here with the variant textured
paper rather than the usual marbled paper wrap. There is also a small envelope
inscribed with a dot within a circle which preserves the talisman, an eye glyph
painted with walnut ink on the inside of folded snakeskin effect paper. The
book has been well read so the binding is eased but by no mean compromised or
loose, ever so slight dustiness to spine Very Good + in slipcase which has some
dustiness and slight marks, Very Good +
The Amethystine Light booklet is Fine, the envelope enclosing it has, necessarily,
been torn open. The talisman is Mint, the envelope containing it Very Good Order No. 4-16-39 £1475

blocked in. All contained within a specially made very substantial oak box. The
text was written in early 2004 as one of the series of Monadic Transmission
grimoires, each being a hand written manuscript book enclosed with talismanic
objects in a wooden box. Some were passed by the author to trusted associates
and some were sent out into the Universe, the author deliberately taking no
role in deciding their destination, like a seed in an ark cast adrift, to see
where they might land. This was one of the latter, which found its way back to
the Cultus Sabbati to be issued in this limited edition by Xoanon. Hence the
use of a wooden box for this deluxe edition of the reprint, with the
talismafied host/seed. The text consists of two sets of Aphorisms with
accompanying coloured sigils, the first set being titled "The 13 Maxims of
the Brothel", the second "The Virgin's Gift, also Called Virtues
Higher than Morals". The themes are decidedly sexual and the result is a
truly fine example of Andrew's artwork and poetry elegant presented in a manner
entirely sympathetic to the original. All components Fine except the envelope
which shows some rubbing and box which shows small indent (illustrated) Order

Chumbley, One, The Grimoire of the Golden Toad, Xoanon 2000 64pp Full faux leather binding.
64pp Number 26 of a Limited Edition of 77 copies. The scarcest published Cultus
Sabbatai book. It gives the ancient ritual involving the crucifixion of a toad
to obtain a magical bone. This came to be particularly used to control horses.
A homely yet handsome and talismanic production. This copy has small envelope
with handwritten inscription with calligraphic flourish by the author "Blackthorn,
Toadskin, Bone" but lacks the toad bone. Also it does not have the
"Sabatrachion" magical script or the sigilised envelope that contains
it.. The boards are flat, not bowed as is usually the case with this edition.

81 copies, half bound in black goat in sturdy cloth bound slipcase. Inscription by author signed with his
magical name. Shimmering grey cloth blocked in black with grotesque mask with dancing
radiant border. Striking full page illustrations and vignettes with occasional
and restrained use of rubification.
This work gives a surprising amount of information concerning the nature
of the Sabbatic witchcraft. Other works by the author have concentrated upon
the herbal mysteries, he now turns his attention to the essential mysteries of
the Sabbatic Craft itself. Sections of the book describe astral mindspaces,
initiatory visions which inform the rituals and teachings of the Sabbatic
Craft. Others describe actual techniques. Teachings concerning our magickal
potentials and an initiatory view of our place in the Universe and its nature
are given. A useful glossary clarifies the specialist vocabulary in which the
nature of the Mysteries are explained. An important book giving significant
information not available elsewhere.

Goetia & Honorius,
Editions Astaroth (Hellfire Club) not dated. Two large format (29cm x
21cm) books in quarter leather clam shell
box with leather tie. Both books in matching full leather blocked with seal of
Astaroth with hand marbled endpapers. The texts and illustrations reproduced
have a convoluted bibliography:-
Book of the Goetia of Solomon
the King, ix (plus vii, viii + ix repeated) + 65pp + (4pp) The text is a
facsimile of Crowley's personal copies of the 1904 first edition reproducing
the substantial annotations therein. These commence with three pages carrying
Gerald Yorke's notes. The Preliminary Invocation or Bornless ritual is given
twice. The first reproduces the text from Crowley's vellum bound copy, the
second presents the text from Crowley's camel hair bound copy which has a
different set of annotations. These will be important for anyone studying the
genesis of Liber Samekh. Whilst the Introduction has only two additional
annotated footnotes by Crowley the text itself has seven illustrations of
Goetic demons by Crowley, plus some additional annotations. There is then a two
page list in the hand of Gerald Yorke giving the appearance of the demons from
the Bagh-I-Muattar plus Crowley's sources for that material. Finally there are
three pages of Enochian Calls in the hand of Leah Hirsig plus a page
reproducing talismans from Crowley's Temple of L.I.L. in Mexico. These texts were first published by First
Impressions in 1993, then Hellfire Press 2005
Various Anon., The Grimoire or
Book of Spells of Pope Honorius 98pp coloured reproduction. have text or
illustrations, the blank pages of the original manuscript being reproduced.
This is a facsimile of the manuscript, probably by Frederick Hockley, belonging
to F.G Irwin who was a member of Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, The Society
of Eight, the Fratres Lucis and the Golden Dawn. The sheets were originally
printed for what was to become the Society of Esoteric Endeavour edition of
2006, the first edition, but were rejected as being of poor quality. The
bookbinder behind Hellfire Club agreed not to use them until the SEE was out of
print and this edition seems to be in accordance with that agreement.
Aside from the issue of the
quality of the Honorius sheets, and that the binding is a bit tight, a very
impressive publication Both books Mint in Fine box Order No. 4-16-47 £400

Grimoire of the Spirit of the Place,
Society of Esoteric Endeavour 2007, 1st Edition, large format (10½ ins x 7 ins) 20pp. Numbered limited edition of 80
copies. Large format hardback 13ins x 9ins, padded boards, pigskin leather
label, linen cover secured with pigskin leather ties. The original manuscript
was penned in French in the late 18th Century. It seems to describe a ritual
that the writer carried out. Protection is sought from a demonic Trinity before
Christian powers are used to evoke an infernal spirit, specially associated
with the place of the working, into a piglet that is led into a magic circle
where it is slain. This releases the spirit but it he is constrained within the
circle until he signs the Grimoire of the title, which has been prepared
according to certain specifications.
The book is then treated like a child, being baptised with a godparent
present and so forth. The text states that if you are in possession of the
original Grimoire “..or one like it” then you do not have to perform the
complete ritual but just read out the conjurations. The original spirit will
then send one of his minions to assist you. For this reason this the physical
manifestation of this, the first ever edition, is guided by the specifications given
in the text, being 20 leaves, bound in shot taffeta (which shimmers in
different colours) This copy lacks the cross piece of linen with pig-skin
leather ties. Slight and unintrusive impressions in the padding covering front
board. Fine Order No. 4-16-48 £350

Sharpe, The Secrets of the Kaula Circle, A Tale of Fictitious People Recounting
Strange Rites Still Practised by the Cult followed by a translation of a very old
MS on the Science of Breath,
Teitan Press 2012 Hardback in dustwrapper xxx + 97pp David Templeman provides
an excellent introduction to the text (first published in 1936) explaining that
the author was a respected author on India and Indian religion. By the
standards of the period, she was well informed concerning tantra and, unlike Arthur Avalon (Sir John
Woodroofe), she did not gloss over the physical practices. But she did adopt
conventional Brahmin hostility to Tantra, considering it an alien import from
Tibet and not truly Indian. She was also hostile to western sexual mystics,
Crowley specifically, and clearly made it her business to learn of Thelemic
practices, possibly from a participant. Sharpe wanted to warn people,
especially women, against exploitation by both Indian and Western practitioners
of sexual magic and wrote a work of "fiction" to avoid litigation.
When first published Secrets of the
Kaula Circle represented the first English language text to treat explicitly of
the use of sexual fluids in Indian Tantra. Its hostility to Crowley combined
with the knowledge shown of his practices, makes it curious and entertaining.
In 1945, when the tantric alchemist David Curwen showed Crowley her book, he
described her as "a mean and mangy, snotty weasel-like creature, a mass of
spite and envy" Mint in Fine

alone, here lovingly republished in a superior form. The endpapers reproduce

Grant, Grist to Whose Mill?,
Starfire 2012, Hardback 233pp. Grant's first novel, originally penned 1952-53
(though one wonders if there have been any rewrites!), and particularly
interesting as the main characters are all real people and include MacGregor
Mathers, a malefic Crowley, Rose Crowley, Aiwas, Kenneth and Steffi Grant,
Ithell Colquhoun, David Curwen, Gerald Gardner, Karl Germer, Gerald Yorke, Jack
Parsons, Frater Achad and Austin Osman Spare. It is most set some years after
Crowley's death, and Grant heads the British section of the OTO. He becomes
aware that Crowley's spirit is earthbound and will seek resurrection through a
sacrificial rite to be performed by Gerald Gardner and others, but there are
older, darker forces afoot. Grant's character realises that all the players,
are fleeting configurations of a greater consciousness. The endpapers carry
reproductions of Grants diaries pages from 1952 and 53 which mention writing
the novel and give a fascinating
insight into his reading and incredibly busy magical activity at the time,
including giving someone their IXth OTO degree! A sheet loosely enclosed gives
details of who is disguised by which pseudonym, credited to Henrik Bogdan Mint
