A Gentleman of Hastings, Netherwood, Last Resort of Aleister Crowley, Accumulator Press 2012 with additional contributions from Frater Amor Fati & the English Heretic, Forward by Anok Pe (David Tibet),  Hardback in striking covers showing the façade of the Netherwood building. xii + 227pp + (28pp) section of plates, some coloured. Limited edition of 400 copies (though this is not stated).  The Gentleman of Hastings being Antony Clayton, a historian who has published books upon the folklore, subterrania, coffee houses and decadence in London. He applies his research skills to look at Netherwood, generally perceived, previously, as a retirement home run by eccentrics who tolerated Crowley. Whilst not untrue, this work shows so much more. The proprietors of Netherwood, fired by socialist belief, sought to create a utopian community and hosted many visiting intellectuals, theatrefolk and political activists. Of course such activities were in abeyance during the war when Crowley started living there, but the influence remained and, even in the 1950’s, the building was being used to host Communist Party summer schools. Mr. Clayton has identified what may be Crowley’s only ever conventional party political action, when he proposed his friend and landlord as a local Labour councillor, but notes that this was totally out of step with the Beast’s political sympathies! The bulk of the book is provided by Frater Amor Fati (Gary Lachman) in his finely written text The Mark of the Beast. This surveys Crowley’s Life at Netherwood, describing significant relationships and visitors.  The excellent research will surely yield new information to any reader. As this includes Kenneth Grant, David Curwen, Gerald Gardner, Dion Fortune, Ferderic Mellinger, Grady McMurtry Michael Houghton this is about more than Crowley and provides significant insights into history of occultism of the period. By concentrating on the Beast’s twilight years, and with so much context, a fresh, and warm impression of Crowley emerges.  The 28pp of plates provide numerous photos of Crowley and his friends and associates, also coloured reproduction of some of his artwork. Aleister Crowley (Ed. Peter Koenig), How to Make Your Own O.T.O., Black Flag 2006 A4 format comb binding 310pp A reprint of the of the 1996 ARW publication. Presents copies of Crowley's (mostly handwritten) ms from Yorke Collection in the Warburg Institute. It gives ms for the OTO initiations Ist to VIth, plus De Hommunculo & Agape (with a few illustrations but missing a page though the book is complete) plus other IXth degree details. Also AC's notes of Golden Dawn rituals 0 = 0 to 5 = 6. Ritual CXX of Order of Thelema, Invocation of Horus plus other bits & pieces. Whatever the compiler's motives (the cover is deliberately unsightly & the title a poke at Grady McMurty & the Caliphate OTO he has produced a work that sympathetic & involved students of the Thelema will undeniable find fascinating, though many will wish to avoid reading the ritual texts lest the psychodrama of the rituals be diminished. Crowleys handwriting is at times appalling and the copying is not always very good. A magnifying glass & patience is required, even then bits will be illegible. The larger scale of this Black Flag reprint compaired to the ARW 1st Edition assists here.. Nevertheless, a great deal less expensive for most than a trip to the Warburg!  Fine Order No. 520001 £60

The edges of the pages are dyed. The text is a facsimile of Crowley's personal copies of the 1904 first edition reproducing the substantial annotations therein. These commence with three pages carrying Gerald Yorke's notes. The Preliminary Invocation or Bornless ritual is given twice. The first reproduces the text from Crowley's vellum bound copy, the second presents the text from Crowley's camel hair bound copy which has a different set of annotations. These will be important for anyone studing the genesis of Liber Samekh. Whilst the Introduction has only two additional annotated footnotes by Crowley the text itself has seven illustrations of Goetic demons by Crowley, plus some additional annotations. There is then a two page list in the hand of Gerald Yorke giving the appearance of the demons from the Bagh-I-Muattar plus Crowley's sources for that material. Finally there are three pages of Enochian Calls in the hand of Leah Hirsig plus a pages reproducing talismans from Crowley's Temple of L.I.L. in Mexico.  As York notes here the text of the Goetia itself was derived from original manuscripts by MacGregor Mathers - the "Dead Hand" referred to in the title - though, in fact, very much alive in 1904. Robert Fitzgerald, A Gathering of Masks, Three Hands Press 2010 Numbered limited edition of 462pp. Hardback 142pp Coloured endpapers, gilt blocked covers in elegant gold coloured dustwrapper . The author is an initiate of the Cultus Sabbati. Here he presents an Arabic retelling of the Cain mythos. Then "By Seal and Sphere, a Short History of Astral Magic, both texts being precursors to an exploration of Liber 231, being Crowley's highly abbreviated chart of the Qlipoth of the 22 Hebrew letters/tarot trumps. This exploration is not a question of academic research but rather courageous projection of the consciousness into the astral and the recording of the experience, together with some subsequent commentary. These magical workings, involving the author and a colleague, took a period of ten years to complete.

The book is graced with three full-page illustrations by Barry Hale (Liber 49, Fulgur etc.) In Liber 231 Crowley advances two sets of sigils for the Qlipoth, but the clear implication is that more sets are yet to be discovered. The illustrations are mandalas of the Qlipoth, each one a set of sigils, either Crowley's or the set derived from the workings performed by the author and his colleague.

Thelemic Magic and Cultus Sabbati might, superficially, appear quite disparate vectors of occultism, however, there has long been a fundamental interaction with a striking resonance between Crowley's ritual crucifixion of a frog and the Waters of the Moon ceremony. Of course, a number of articles by Andrew Chumbley were published in Starfire, the journal associated with the Typhonian OTO, which has been most active in realising the magical power potential of the qlipoth. This book is an important manifestation of the interaction between these vectors. Components of  one of the mandalas appear upon the dustwrapper  Mint in Mint DW Order No. 10991 £66

Kennth and Steffi Grant, Images and Oracles of Austin Osman Spare, Fulgur 2003 Landscape format hardback, 98pp, this being copy No. 23 of 93 deluxe copies bound in quarter leather in slipcase signed by both Kennth and Steffi Grant. Landscape format 12ins x 10ins, printed in red and black, frontispiece printed in brown ink. Many illustrations. First published in 1975 this work was immensely influential in bringing Spare to the attention of a new generation of occultists. Its subject matter, its insight and it probably the most sought after book of the 1970's occult revival. It presents a cogent and concise exposition of Spares system of sorcery and Gnosis. The text is augmented with numerous illustrations, many never seen elsewhere. This

new edition has a new preface by Kenneth Grant but then adheres to the format, design and binding of the original. However it should not be seen as a facsimile. This edition is immensely better than the first. Rather than merely copying a copy of the first edition the entire book has been reset, but using the original font. Where ever possible (ie almost everywhere) the

original of the illustrations has been sought out and recopied so the images are immensely clearer and sharper. Myriads of tiny glitches have been corrected. A remarkable testament to the dedication to high standards of production that this publisher has championed. A highly recommended book that has an historic significance in the development of modern occultism.  Fine in Fine DW in Fine slipcase Order No. 800215 £350

Kenneth Grant,, At the Feet of the Guru, Twenty Five Essays, Starfire 2006 Hardback. No. 78 of 97 deluxe copies sighed by Kenneth and Steffi Grant, quarter bound in cloth and paper covered boards, the usual choice of leather being eschewed on account of the vegetarian princeples of the Holy Men. 134pp Plates Dustwrapper carries coloured illustration by Steffi Grant. This book collects the writings of Kenneth (and Steffi Grant, as one essay is by her) concerning Indian mysticism and mystics. Most were published in the 1950s in very obscure Indian journals that most readers of Grant will never have seen. Some appeared in Man Myth and Magic in the 1970s and a few appeared more recently in Indian journals that will be unfamiliar to the Western Occultist.  This is not a merely academic work of comparative religion but a deeply committed and empathetic examination of aspects and practitioners of the Indian mystical tradition  The essays an admirable clarity and conciseness. At its core is the perception of the illusory nature of self and its transcendence. The work is of importance. Crowley's work on Blavatsky's Vision and the Voice demonstrated that he considered the A.'.A.'. to be informed by the same Great White Brotherhood for whom the  Theosophical Society worked in service, indeed at one point he hoped the Theosophical Society would realise that he was its true head. Blavatsky Secret Chiefs were mostly identified as Indian Holy Men, it has been suggested that the supernatural claims may have been a mask for actual teachers. Interesting that Grant, who reformulated the OTO to operate in a manner more akin to the A.'.A.'. should re-connect with Indian mystical traditions. Certainly the Indian teachings are here related to Thelemic and western occult concepts  Fine Order No. 810012 £170

Robert C Stein, The Mystery of Letters and the Tree of Life, Black, Jackal Press 2012 Numbered Limited Edition of 418 cloth bound hardback book. Xiv + 250pp +  8pp of coloured plates which give forms of the  Tree of Life very different to the familiar glyph. The first is, the Cube of Space, is derived from the Sepher Yetzirah, briefly described by Paul Foster Case and given full exploration by Kevin Townley’s 1993 book of that title. Using Liber Trigrammaton, the author attributes the Trigrams to the faces of the cube, each of which is subdivided into four (as did C. F. Russell). Further permutations are then created. The second is Quantum Tree, derived from permutations of the Tree of Life when conceived in three dimensions. The author finds Liber Trigrammaton describes the form of the Quantum Tree. Through careful examination of the manuscript tools unlock the secrets of the Book of the Law, providing specific answers to the explicit riddles that must test such an investigation. Then the tools, particularly the Quantum Tree, are used to analyse and commentate upon Liber 231, Crowley’s enigmatic illustrated and highly significant text describing the Qlippoth. This book thus follows other commentaries on this Liber, namely Kenneth Grant’s Nightside of Eden, articles published by Motta and Ray Eales in the Society O.T.O. Equinox and more recently Robert Fitzgerald’s Gathering of Masks. The authors approach is utterly Thelemic and the result highly coherent. Intellectually, it is deeply impressive. A trained mind at work! – but then the author is a university professor. The author is a respected figure in US and international Thelemic circles, one can now see why.  Fine Order No. 34007 £35
