Sylvia Beamon, The Royston Cave, Used by Saints of Sinners, Local Historical Influences of the Templar and Hospitaller Movements, Cortney 1992 Ltd. Ed. Of 1000. Large format 12ins x 8ins xx + 314pp Plates and figures (three foldouts, a few coloured). The authoritative work about a truly remarkable site, strangely overlooked. At the crossing of two ancient English roads (Ichnield Way & Ermine Street) an artificial cave was discovered in the 18thC. The author shows, was defintely a secret shrine of the Knights Templar. The walls are decorated with vistas of enigmatic carvings. Some have perceived these as pagan, Christian, heretical and masonic symbols. Certainly they were done secretly by the Knights Templars and some may even have been completed by members after the Orders suppression. The meanings are elusive as graffiti, traffic vibration and seepage of acid rain has compromised them. However, early photgraphs and earlier drawings survive and are reproduced here. This substantial work explains why one can be certain ot the Templar involvement and places the cave in the context of what is known about the Order. Given the interest in the Knights Templars it is strange that this, perhaps the most enigmatic of all sites in the U.K. should be so overlooked. Any serious student of Knights Templar mysteries will need this book Fine in Fine DW Order No. 690118 30

Pillans, Hardback 64pp Full leather binding with gilt decoration to front and back boards, spine and interior edge of boards, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Apparently printed for subscribers listed with names and addresses on last 7pp. The "Count" of authors name on title page appears to have been removed and replaced with small piece of paper on reverse of page, perhaps making a correction. Explores the Knights Templar origins of freemasonry. COPAC indicates only one copy in UK collections (Bodlean Library) none in the British Library. The Bodlean copy is given the date 1847, whereas this copy bears the date 1851. This discrepancy is being investigated. There is some wear to the boards but overall in Good sound condition.
