Austin Osman Spare and Vera Wainwright, Art and Letter; Word and Sign, IHO 2003 Paperback 257pp Coloured frontispiece. Printed in various

colours. Vera Wainwright was introduced to Spare by Victor Neuburg. The became friends and in due course Spare supplied 6 illustrations for her poems which was first published as Poems and Masks by Toucan Press (the same press which published Kenneth Grant's early poetry) in 1968. The present work reproduces that edition with its introduction and Wainright's note about Spare with the addition of extra illustrations by him. Also reproduced is the introduction from the second edition of Poems and Masks. Also reproduced are Wainwright's letters to Spare with an introduction by Frank Letchford. These show there relationship was far more than professional. Evidently she supported Spare and they planned to live together. This was not to be. Spare spent his last years in the company of Millicent Paine and it is speculated as to whether he treated Vera at all fairly. Appendices include:- An intriguing photograph of Paine. Is she making the sign of the horned God and what is the highly carved chair, or throne, that she sits upon? A discussion concerning the designs by Spare published in the original Toucan Press edition with some speculation as to sources and showing where similar designs were also used. A short piece by Spare entitled "Fragmenta" with a Frank Letchford introduction. The section on Spare from Adventures with Inspiration by Hannen Swaffer with coloured plate of a Spare portrait of the man. Two poems by Victor Neuburg from the Triumph of Pan were dedicated to Spare  Mint Order No. 84571 £12
